ROBIN SAND

Words by Robin Sand · Photographs from the Sand archive

I grew up in transit. Five continents before I had a fixed address, half my childhood in the back of a truck with my father driving and a camera on the seat between us. My first buffalo came at thirteen, on a morning I can still describe minute by minute, and it set the pattern for everything since. Go to the hard places, pay attention, bring the story home.

The trips never stopped, but somewhere I started building as well as travelling. Come & Stay and now Vallora, companies made on the move, from a laptop on a veranda or a plane. I am the one in front of the lens where my father is the one behind it, and the one turning the trips into modern chapters.

People ask how the two things fit, the wild and the building. They are the same thing to me. Both are about going where it is not easy, reading what is actually in front of you, and finishing what you start. The plain taught me that before any boardroom did.

Go to the hard places, pay attention, bring the story home.

So this is the other half of the trail. My father kept the record for twenty five years. My part is to carry it forward, into the journal, into the worlds we return to, and into whatever we build next.
